Historical Note
George Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), appointed to the post of zoologist to King Louis XV of France. He began his duties by cataloging the king’s collections of wild animals and plants in the royal botanical gardens, and the contents of the royal cabinets of natural curiosities. However, the main achievement of his career was the publication of a monumental Histoire Naturelle in 44 volumes from 1749 to 1788. The best artists and engravers available were commissioned to work on this most noble and beautiful of volumes in the history of biological illustration.
