This collection contains three notebooks of lecture notes by Samuel K. Hoshour concerning the topics of church history, moral philosophy, and Roman literature. He gave these lectures as a Modern Languages Professor at North Western Christian University (now Butler University).

Biographical Note

Samuel K. Hoshour was the first official president of North Western Christian University, later to become Butler University. He was initially a professor and then became president in 1858. Hoshour was removed as president when the Civil War broke out, demoted back to professor, and in 1862 left to become the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He is a well-regarded scholar and there remains a scholarship in his name at Indiana University.
