J. Joseph Riley medical school papers, 1880 - 1883
Scope and Contents
Papers documenting Riley's attendance at the Medical College of Indiana from 1880 to 1880, as well as his medical license from 1883. Included in the collection are a small quantity of tickets admitting him to matriculation, lectures, clinics, sessions, demonstrations, laboratories, and the Osteological Cabinet. Also included are an invitation to the Commencement ceremony, and a program of the graduating exercises of the Sydenham Medical Soceity. Finally, the colleciton also includes a certificate of membership to the Bartholomew County Medical Society, as well as Riley's Physician's License from 1883 granting him eligibility to practice medicine, surgery, and obstetrics in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

Historical Notes
The Medical College of Indiana was founded in 1869, as an outgrowth of the Indianapolis Academy of Medicine. By the college had become a department of Butler University and had a building on Butler's Irvington campus at the corner of Pennsylvania and Maryland streets. In 1905 the Medical College of Indiana merged with the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons of Indianapolis and the Fort Wayne College of Medicine to form the School of Medical of Purdue University.
