Hilton U. Brown Collection

 Collection
Identifier: MSS006

Scope and Contents

This collection contains personal papers and other materials belonging or relating to Hilton U. Brown, Sr. The bulk of the collection is the correspondence from Hilton U. Brown Jr. (HUBJr.) and Paul V. Brown written during World War I. Following the death of HUBJr. in the war, Brown published some of these letters in Hilton U. Brown Jr.: One of Three Brothers in Artillery; the collection includes typescripts of letters selected to appear in the book. These letters, in addition to letters of sympathy regarding HUBJr.’s death, reveal not only the character of HUBJr., but also the American attitude toward World War I. A glimpse of French attitudes toward American soldiers can be found in the few letters written by the French couple who cared for HUBJr.’s grave in France. The collection also includes a scant amount of business and financial papers, as well as personal papers not related to Brown’s sons. Photographs are primarily from Paul V. Brown’s military days, they range from shots taken during training to a few photographs taken overseas. There is a portrait of HUBJr. wearing his uniform; it was taken in a French studio. There are a limited number of photographs of family and friends.

Biographical Notes

Hilton Ultimus Brown (Feb. 20, 1859–Sept. 20, 1958) was a devoted supporter of Butler University, successful newspaperman, and civic leader. “I must divide myself into many parts for in my long life here I have become engaged with many interests,” Brown wrote a few days before his death. An Indianapolis native, Brown entered North Western Christian University (now Butler University) in 1874. Brown earned his undergraduate degree from BU in 1880; in 1882 he received an M.A. from the school. After working as the principal for the Oaktown Academy in southern Indiana for one year, Brown joined the staff of the Indianapolis News in 1881. He spent seventy-seven years with the paper in a variety of capacities: reporter, managing editor, general manager, and secretary -treasurer. When in 1948 the News became part of Indianapolis Newspapers, Inc., Brown became vice president of the corporation. Brown began his years of service to BU when he was elected to the board of directors in 1885; just twenty-five years old, he was the youngest member ever elected. Brown served on the board for seventy years, fifty-two as president. When he retired in 1955, the board elected him president emeritus. In 1959 Brown was posthumously awarded the Butler Award for distinguished service to the school.

On October 30, 1803 Brown married Jennie Hannah. The couple had ten children, five boys, five girls, and raised their family in Irvington, where Brown served on town and school boards. In 1939 Brown received the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Staff of Honor for contributions made to the city through journalism and service.
