Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials relating to Spurs, a national honor society. These materials include newspaper clippings, photographs, holiday cards, SPURS’ ephemera, and correspondence (both handwritten, typed, and telegrams). Some of these ephemera include posters for events and little invitation booklets. Additionally, there are different documents relating to the petition of a SPURS chapter at Butler and other founding documents, such as multiple versions of the SPURS’ constitution. There are also many materials relating to different SPURS conventions.

Historical Note

Spurs was a sophomore women’s honorary service society that was the combination of two other honorary service societies, the Torch Club and the Scarf Club, which petitioned to become Spurs in 1933. SPURS stands for Sacrifice, Patriotism, Understanding, Responsibility, Service. The purpose of SPURS was to promote school spirit and support all activities in which the student body participates, to foster among the women of the college or university a spirit of loyalty and helpfulness, and to uphold all traditions of the college. Additionally, Spurs was meant to help developed leadership among women and provided service to their campus, such as raising money and hosting events.
