Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials relating to Mu Phi Epsilon, Kappa Chapter, a professional music fraternity at Butler University from 1953 to 1986, with additional materials from 2006.This collection includes various handbooks, invitations to events, programs, general correspondence (both handwritten and typed), and convention related materials. There are also articles from newspapers, such as the Collegian (student newspaper) and Indianapolis Star, that mention Mu Phi Epsilon. There are a few photographs and some pages from the Drift (Butler University’s yearbook). Finally, there is a miscellanea folder that contains different pamphlets, programs, and documents relating to the organization of Mu Phi Epsilon.

Historical Note

Mu Phi Epsilon, a professional music fraternity, was founded on November 13, 1903. It is an international professional music fraternity, with collegiate chapters in places such as the Philippines and Canada. Mu Phi Epsilon began as a sorority meant to be comparable to Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia but then became co-ed in 1977 hence why it is referred to as a fraternity now. Mu Phi Epsilon’s purpose is to recognize scholarship and musicianship and the promotion of friendship.
