Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Petitions

 Collection
Identifier: UA05.29

Scope and Contents

The only material in this collection were documents housed in one binder that acted as Phi Mu Alpha-Alpha Sigma Colony’s Petition for reactivation. This includes signatures from students and faculty involved, letters of recommendation, and biographies from present and past Sinfonia members. The fraternity’s by-laws and recruitment plans are included along with meeting minutes and reports from those that were still meeting as a fraternity before the official charter was given back. There is a content list in the very first folder that outlines the order of everything and the repository has kept the order the same.

Historical Note

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was a music fraternity that was founded on October 6, 1898, at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Usually known as Sinfonia by its members, it is the oldest and largest music fraternity in the world. The primary purpose of Sinfonia is to encourage and promote the highest standards of creativity, performance, education, and research in music in America. Sinfonia offers the opportunity for personal and musical growth to men committed to the advancement of music in America and to developing the qualities of leadership necessary to accomplish that goal. Butler University's chapter was deactivated in the 1980s for an unknown reason and a petition for reactivation was sent in 1995. The petition was approved, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia-Alpha Sigma chapter is active on campus to this day.
