Women in Communications Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains mostly written materials, such as pages from Drift and the Collegian, about the organization and existence of on-campus clubs like the Scribblers’ Club. Many of these documents aim to document the transition of the Scribblers’ Club to Theta Sigma Phi to Women in Communication, eventually. This collection also includes two copies of “The Christmas Stocking,” a Christmastime publication written and published by the Scribblers’ Club.

Historical Note
This collection of on-campus organizations began as The College Scribblers Club, organized to obtain a national women’s journalistic fraternity charter in 1923. As Butler’s journalism department increased its curriculum, it soon met the requirements of Theta Sigma Phi, a larger journalism organization. Scribblers transitioned into the organization as the Alpha Iota chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. In time, the organization began to work closely with Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalism fraternity on campus with male members. Eventually, these two organizations became Women in Communications and the Society of Professional Journalists on campus, respectively. At this time, both organizations came to do away with their gendered separation. Neither organization is presently on campus, though many of their projects, such as the Collegian, are still active today.
