Physician Assistant Student Society Scrapbooks

 Collection
Identifier: UA05.35

Scope and Contents

This collection contains one unique find outside of the three scrapbooks provided. The document titled “Physician Assistant Day Proclamation” is framed and signed by the president of the university at the time of its use. As mentioned, this collection otherwise contains three scrapbooks. Two of these scrapbooks are student-made and pertain to news and happenings within the club in the early 2000s. The third scrapbook seems more like a collection of written materials, such as photographs, slides, and newspaper clippings, gathered from past groups. This scrapbook is less artistic and seemingly more of an “archive” for the student society.

Historical Note

Butler University proposed the Physician Assistant (PA) major and school to the Academic and Student Affairs Committee and Board of Trustees in 1994. The PA She PA Student Society was seemingly born soon after the program began. The society initially began as the Butler University Methodist Physician Assistant Student Society (BUMPA), dropping its religious affiliation later in time. The society allowed students to connect over their rigorous academic schedules. The scrapbooks show typical happenings within the club, which include executive boards and membership, volunteer and philanthropy efforts, and yearly goals as a society, typically in terms of raising money. Today, Butler has several PA groups, including the PA club and Pi Alpha, as well as organizations more specific to majors such as health science.
