Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of papers written by George O. Comfort, the bulk of which appear to be speeches given to a variety of audiences. George O. Comfort was a professor of political science at Butler University from 1949 until his retirement in 1975. The speeches address Republican Party concerns, the judiciary, the purpose of political parties, West Africa, the Electoral College, and more. In addition, the collection contains the typed statement Comfort made in 1969 before a three-judge federal panel regarding multi-member district representation. Many of these papers appear to be typed drafts, with handwritten notes and corrections.

Biographical Note

George O. Comfort (1908-1989) was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on December 29, 1908. He received his A.B. in 1932 from Western Michigan University, his M.B. in 1934 from the University of Michigan, and his PhD in 1939 from the University of Kentucky. He taught at Western Michigan University (1934-1946) and Denison University (1946-1949) and then taught political science at Butler University from 1949 until his retirement in 1975. He passed away in Indianapolis in 1989.

This collection consists of the papers George O. Comfort, political science professor at Butler University from 1949 until his retirement in 1975. The papers are mostly typed speeches that Dr. Comfort gave to various audiences.
