Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of the different chapters of the text “Christopher Columbus Admiral of the Ocean Sea,” written by Charles W. Moores. Rough drafts of both a table of contents and each chapter are included, as well as a final draft with maps and pictures. Moores extensively covers the life of Christopher Columbus, from boyhood in 1451 to his discovery of the “New World” in 1492. Moores published various books in his time, including further texts on Christopher Columbus, Abraham Lincoln, and the history of Indiana. The title of this text was later changed before being published to “The Life of Christopher Columbus for Boys and Girls.”

Biographical Note

Charles W. Moores was born in Indianapolis and received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Later, he attended Central Law School in Indianapolis. In 1888, he became a U.S. commissioner. He was a member of the Indianapolis School Board, serving as both Vice-President and President during his time. He was on the Board of Directors for Butler College (now Butler University) as well, serving from 1903-1909. Moores valued education and participated in other civic roles including with the Indianapolis Art Institute, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Indiana Historical Commission.
