Biographical Note
George Marott is the namesake for the former Marott Hotel in Indianapolis, which today exists as converted apartments. Located on Meridian Street, the hotel would become where much of high society would reside within the city, bringing Marott great fortune and connections, including with Winston Churchill. Marott was also a merchant, owning both a shoe store and a coat store, solidifying him as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the area. Ella and George Marott married in 1879. Ella Marott served as a cashier in George’s first shoe store on East Washington Street; she was active in civic and women’s affairs until shortly before her death; Ella Marott is also the aunt of Allegra Stewart, who was an English professor at Butler University for many years. George Marott passed away in 1946, two years after Ella; they are both buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
