Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two scrapbooks, one belonging to Almeda F. Lowman and one belonging to Nellie Hollingsworth, who were students at the Teachers College of Indianapolis from 1920 to 1921. The scrapbooks contain ephemeral items from their time at school, such as photographs, newspaper clippings, invitations, programs, and other memorabilia.

Biographical and Historical Notes

Almeda F. Lowman was born in Huntington, Indiana in 1898 and taught elementary school after graduating from the Teachers College of Indianapolis. She passed away in Goshen, Indiana of spinal meningitis in 1931.

Nellie Hollingsworth was born in 1902 and taught elementary school after graduating from the Teachers College of Indianapolis. She and Almeda Lowman attended Teachers College at the same time and were friends. Some years after Almeda’s death, Nellie married her friend’s widow, Leslie E. Dunkin, and became the stepmother to Dorothy Looney, who donated this collection. Nellie passed away in Bremen, Indiana in 1994.

The Teachers College of Indianapolis was first organized by Eliza A. Baker in 1882, originally called the Kindergarten Normal Training School. In 1903, a permanent building housed the school on the northeast corner of 23rd and Alabama Streets in Indianapolis. In 1930, the school merged with Butler University to become a part of its school of education.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Dorothy Looney (Almeda Lowman’s daughter and Nellie Hollingsworth’s step-daughter) donated this collection to Butler University Libraries in 1999 (Accession Number 1999.001).
