Scope and Contents
This collection is composed of the published papers of David Starr Jordan. He writes primarily on the topic of fish species and has several co-authors. Over half of the papers concern fish in Japanese waters. David Starr Jordan taught zoology at Butler University and then served as the president of Indiana University before becoming Stanford University’s first president.

Biographical Note
David Starr Jordan was the founding president of Stanford University, serving from 1891-1913. Earlier in life, he was an ichthyologist and taught zoology at Butler University; he also received an honorary Ph.D. from Butler. Prior to leaving for Stanford, Jordan served as the president of Indiana University from 1884 to 1891. Jordan was a proponent of eugenics and an antimilitarist.
