Scope and Contents

This collection includes black-and-white photographs of Butler University Track and Cross-Country team events; some team members are labeled on the back of the photographs. The collection also includes photocopies and the original of “The Spiral Scrapbook,” which details the teams’ seasons between 1935 and 1938 through newspaper clippings.

Biographical / Historical

The repository has little documentation regarding the provenance of this collection. However, William F. Davis, Senior was a 1935 Butler graduate who went on to be co-founder of the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It is likely he is the donor. Mr. Davis also held the Little State Intercollegiate pole vault record for 20 years and the Butler record for 25 years. In 1972, he was inducted into the Butler University Athletic Hall of Fame, and he was named "B-Man of the Year" in 1974. Mr. Davis was Bulldog of the Year in 1977 and served for three years on the Butler Board of Directors.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Exact provenance is unknown, but it is presumed that Bill Davis donated this collection to Butler University Libraries in 1988 (Accession Number 1988.005).
