Historical Note
Schwitzer Hall, the namesake of this collection, was a residence hall on campus at Butler University that came to life in 1956 and housed students for over 60 years. For some of its time, it housed only women, as seen in these scrapbooks. In 2017, the building was mostly demolished by the Shiel Sexton Company, a general contractor hired for the creation of a new residence hall and $30 million dollar project—Irvington House, which resides at the same address as Schwitzer once did.
The hall borrowed its name from Louis H. Schwitzer, an American engineer influential in designing hydraulics for use in bus transportation. He also won the first racing event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.
