Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the professional papers of Chris Theofanis, who worked for Butler University in public and community relations, eventually becoming the Director of Government and Community Relations from 1991 until his death in 1999. It includes correspondence, meeting agenda minutes, government publications, materials from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association documents, and other documents related to Theofanis’ work at Butler University. Butler University documents include those related to the Butler University National Leadership Conference, institutional self-studies, traffic master plan reports, issues of “Butler on the Move”, and documents concerning the Holcomb Research Institute.

Biographical Note

Chris Theofanis (1930-1999) was born in Phoenix, Arizona and spent his formative years in Astoria, New York before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he worked in his family’s restaurant. He was a graduate of Butler University and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Theofanis later worked at Butler University, first as Public Relations Director from 1957 to 1984, then as Director of Community Relations from 1984 to 1991, and lastly as Director of Government and Community Relations from 1991 until his death in 1999. He viewed Butler University as his family and received multiple honors here, including the Butler Alumni Achievement Award in 1987 and being inducted into the Butler Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Theofanis was also active in the community, founding the annual Indianapolis Greek Food Festival, and receiving awards from the United Way of Central Indiana, the Boy Scouts of America, Sertoma, and the Indianapolis Public Relations Society.
