Scope and Contents

Most of this collection is comprised of typed or handwritten notes of Kondeliks’, pertaining to significant persons, places, and the general history of Butler University from the early to mid 1900s. Alongside these notes are various articles and clippings that provide relevant information. Of note are materials referencing president of the university Athean, who was seemingly involved in some sort of scandal during his term. Additionally, some written materials reference a case involving “Miss Weaver,” so seemingly these events were at a time, impactful on the university’s function. Biographical Note

John P. Kondelik seems to have worked primarily as a librarian during his time, serving as the director of libraries at the Stockwell-Mudd Library of Albion College for about 17 years after a previous 44 in the profession. He was connected to Butler University from about 1984–1993, where he was the Irwin Library System director. The paper “BU and the Dream of Distinction” seems to reflect the history of the university with a specific focus on its early creation and the transition from its previous institute, Northwestern Christian University. This paper seemingly served as his PH. D dissertation, a degree which he earned from the University of Michigan. The paper was originally published in 1993.
