This collection contains the publications, newsletters, reports, and pamphlets of the Butler University Police Department (previously Safety Department), spanning the years 1980 to 2014. It also includes clippings regarding the organization’s history, especially regarding the shift from safety department to police department, and the arming of the officers. Of additional interest is the operating manual that provides insight into campus policing, and the case slips.

Historical Note

The Butler University Police Department was established in the 1970s as an armed security force. In the early 1980s, the department began distancing itself from the connotations of a police force, taking the name of “Public Security Department” before entirely disbanding the police department in 1986, to be replaced by a privately contracted security force. In 1990, the public safety department was re-established as an unarmed security force. In 1994, Butler University rearmed the public safety officers, and in 1995, the department became a police force.
