Scope and Contents

This collection of Clowes Hall materials includes letters, playbills, posters, financial documents, organizational charts, and various documents covering the history of events hosted at Clowes Hall. This collection also includes the personal papers of Travis Selmier, the former department head. Among these are playbills predating Clowes Hall. Additionally, materials in the Jordan College of Arts/Music folder include programs predating Clowes Hall.

Historical Note

Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University is a theater and performing arts space opened in 1963. The theater’s namesake is George H. A. Clowes (1877-1958), a former director at Eli Lilly. Funding for the space came in part from the Clowes Fund, Eli Lilly, and Butler University. Large portions of this collection were donated by Travis Selmier (1934-2019), who served as the manager of Clowes Memorial Hall from its opening in 1963-1970.
