Scope and Contents

This collection of Scarlet Quill Materials includes the records, reports, and correspondences of the organization. These consist of petitions, photographs, membership lists, publications, annual reports, scholarship records, and other miscellanea. Of interest is the 1930 Butler University Student Organization Charter and the 1946 anniversary program that includes two small red feathers. This collection also includes clippings from the Collegian, the Drift, and the Indianapolis Star regarding the activities of Scarlet Quill.

Historical Note

Scarlet Quill was a senior women's honorary group founded in 1921 at Butler University. The organization provided scholarships for Butler students and organized campus events. Members were identifiable by the insignia of the organization: a scarlet quill. In 1956 the organization expanded by connecting with the national women’s honor society, Mortar Board. As the Scarlet Quill chapter of Mortar Board, the organization continued to organize campus events like tea services, alumni dinners, and homecoming. While this collection only contains materials from 1921-1983, the national organization of Mortar Board lists Butler University among its active chapters as of 2024.
