Historical Note

The YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) and the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) were once the largest active organizations on Butler University’s campus. The YMCA and YWCA were organizations that allowed college students to connect with those with similar faith, do community service, and hold social events. Both focused on providing “an alert service to the entire campus in a friendly spirit and to promote Christian Fellowship among students.” These remained separate organizations, but it was around 1927 that these two groups began to hold joint meetings and worked on several projects together such as Freshman Camp and Spring Sing. By 1975, it seemed often to refer to the two groups as YW-YMCA and by the 1990s it became the Intercollegiate YMCA, and it appeared to no longer be a Butler University club. Presently, there is no facet of the YMCA that seems active at Butler University besides the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis looking for student volunteers. Similar clubs that do exist on Butler’s campus today are CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ International), Butler Catholic Community, and LCMS-U (Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod).
