Scope and Contents
This collection consists of newspaper clippings about Butler graduate Dr. John Henry Oliver Smith, also known as J. H. O. Smith. The newspaper clippings tell the story of his life a preacher and evangelist in Indiana, as well as his impact on religion in the state. The collection also contains some articles and a post card from the First Christian Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Biographical Note
Dr. J. H. O. Smith was a Christian pastor who was born in Ohio, educated in Indiana, and spent most of his career preaching in Oklahoma. He was a graduate of Butler University in both 1879 and 1884, with a bachelor’s in science and a bachelor’s in arts respectively. During his time at Butler, he was known for his Sunday sermons, and went on to become important pillar of the Christian community in Indiana. His first settled pastorate was in Edinburg, Indiana. In 1886 he was chosen as state evangelist and general secretary of the Indiana Christian Missionary Association. During this service he founded the First Christian Church in Valparaiso, Indiana and served as its pastor from 1888 to 1894. In 1899 he left Valparaiso to accept the pastorate of teh First Christian Church of Oklahoma City.
