Scope and Contents

This collection includes a pin and medallion with the inscription “Universitas Legionensis” from the Universidad de León, Spain. It also included a Spanish-language facsimile of Milagros de San Isidoro, originally written in the 13th century by Bishop Lucas de Tuy and translated into Spanish in 1525 by Juan de Robles. The facsimile was separated and cataloged as a rare book (see Separated Materials note). The materials, including the facsimile, were donated by former Butler University Interim President Gwen Fountain; the connection between President Fountain and the Universidad de León is unknown.

Biographical and Historical Note

Gwen Fountain served a term as interim president of Butler University beginning on June 1, 2000. She was born in Hart, Michigan, graduating from Kalamazoo College with a bachelor's degree in economics. Later, she would go on to study at the University of Michigan, where she earned both her master's and doctorate degrees. She came to Butler University as an economics lecturer in the College of Business Administration. She later worked as director of undergraduate programs, associate provost, and dean of academic affairs. She is the first and only female president of Butler University and served as interim President from 2000 to 2001.

The Universidad de León is in the northwestern part of Spain. It is a public university, founded in 1843. Milagros de San Isidoro, which translates to “Miracles of Saint Isidore,” was issued as a facsimile from the Universidad de León in 1992.
