This collection contains personal papers and other materials belonging or relating to Hilton U. Brown, Sr. The bulk of the collection is the correspondence from Hilton U. Brown Jr. (HUBJr.) and Paul V. Brown written during World War I. Following the death of HUBJr. in the war, Brown published some of these letters in Hilton U. Brown Jr.: One of Three Brothers in Artillery; the collection includes typescripts of letters selected to appear in the book. These letters, in addition to letters of sympathy regarding HUBJr.’s death, reveal not only the character of HUBJr., but also the American attitude toward World War I. A glimpse of French attitudes toward American soldiers can be found in the few letters written by the French couple who cared for HUBJr.’s grave in France. The collection also includes a scant amount of business and financial papers, as well as personal papers not related to Brown’s sons. Photographs are primarily from Paul V. Brown’s military days, they range from shots taken during training to a few photographs taken overseas. There is a portrait of HUBJr. wearing his uniform; it was taken in a French studio. There are a limited number of photographs of family and friends.
