This essay by Butler student Nita P. Walker is a retelling of her family’s story and how the dynamic of race and classification of one’s identity changed over time. Walker discusses her family and what their Black heritage means to them, citing family members first coming to North America as enslaved people in 1501. She then moves forward in time explaining the identities of more recent family members, as well as her wishes for her children in the future and their Black identity.

James Alexander Hanlin Civil War letters, 1863 - 1864

Scope and Contents Within the six letters written by Hanlin, he describes to his wife what it like for them as they are stationed at Camp Nelson in Kentucky. The first letter is written on December 30th, 1863, and the rest in the spring of 1864. He discusses the state of his clothes and salary extensively, as well as some of the work that he is doing. Eaton Family Civil War letters, 1862 - 1864

Scope and Contents The collection consists of seven transcribed letters written to Henry Eaton, one from December of 1862, and the others from the Spring of 1864. The majority of letters are from his sister, Annie Eaton, one from his sister Fanny Leybrook, and one from his cousin L. Simpson.
